IHME's Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study quantifies health loss due to diseases, injuries, and risk factors, for each country and many subnational areas, by age and sex, and over time.

IHME produces a variety of health indicators:
  • Quantified burden for a collectively exhaustive set of 360+ diseases and injuries and 3,000+ disease subtypes or sequelae
    • Condition-specific incidence, prevalence, and deaths
    • Summary measures of condition-specific disability (disability weights and years lived with disability [YLDs])
    • All-cause mortality, years of life lost (YLLs)
    • Overall and condition-specific disability adjusted life-years (DALYs)
  • Exposure to 80+ risk factors and categories of risks (behavioral, metabolic, environmental, occupational drivers of disease)
  • Risk factor attribution (share of deaths attributed to each risk)
  • Underlying population structure; 46 age/sex groups

Estimates are broken down by:
  • Time series 1990-present, forecasts to 2050
  • Sex (male, female)
  • 20 age groups
  • 204 countries/territories and 700+ subnational units

IHME is disaggregating disease burden estimates by race and ethnicity.

Picture
IHME is disaggregating our Global Burden of Disease (GBD) estimates by race and ethnicity, initially in the United States and moving to ex-US settings.

The goal is to produce the data needed to achieve inclusivity in healthcare innovation and delivery, from the design and implementation of clinical trials through to provision of treatments. We have generated robust time trends by race and ethnicity for all contributors to illness and early death at the county level to aid in decision-making that will improve health equity.
