Katrin Burkart

Director, Real-World Evidence

Katrin Burkart, PhD, MSc, is an Assistant Professor of Health Metrics Science at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington, with adjunct appointments in the Departments of Global Health and Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences. Her research focuses on leveraging complex real-world data to generate actionable evidence that informs public health policy and decision-making.

At IHME, Dr. Burkart leads research on environmental and other health risk assessments within the Global Burden of Disease study (GBD), covering air pollution, temperature, and 24 additional risk factors. She has spearheaded the first global, cause-specific estimates of the health burden attributable to non-optimal temperature. Her research also includes forecasting future health outcomes under changing environmental conditions and leading a growing program of work on the global burden of viral diseases, including influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), by adapting the GBD risk-assessment framework to population-level viral surveillance data.

Dr. Burkart has published extensively in leading journals, including The Lancet and Nature Medicine, and her research has been featured by media outlets such as CNN, Scientific American, and Pharmacy Times.

She earned her PhD from Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Germany, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University before joining the University of Washington.
