Case Study: Make-A-Wish |
Granting wishes globally, informed by trusted health data.
The client
Children living with critical illnesses need to be emotionally strong and empowered. To support these children, Make-A-Wish International has a mission to create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. The wish experience can be an important part of the healing process, as it helps replace fear with confidence, sadness with joy and anxiety with hope for these children and their families. A wish can help children build the physical and emotional strength they need to keep living with or fighting their condition. Globally, Make-A-Wish International empowers 40 Affiliates, granting wishes in 50 countries and on six continents, with plans for ambitious growth to fulfil 25,000 wishes yearly by 2025, reaching almost 50% more children compared to 2022. The challenge With a deeply rooted vision to grant the life-changing wish of every eligible child, how best to grow? Facing an increased demand for wishes due to limited healthcare services during the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for effective growth is more pressing than ever. Make-A-Wish CEO, Luciano Manzo, said: “Make-A-Wish International needs to be able to understand global and local patterns of pediatric disease burden to form future strategies and identify potentially underserved populations. Comprehensive and consistent global health metrics are crucial to anticipate wish demand and inform growth plans and expansion to new territories.” Research for Impact, a Singapore-based think-tank, is working with Make-A-Wish to address these questions and identified the need for country-specific pediatric disease burden data focused on conditions that qualify children for wish-granting. |
IHME Client Services role
IHME data can help address these issues by providing metrics that cover the full population, not just the diagnosed or reported disease prevalence. IHME Client Services has worked with Research for Impact to understand these data and enable Make-A-Wish International to identify where there are more children that they can reach. By looking at the data, Make-A-Wish Affiliates may identify specific areas, groups, or medical conditions that may be under-represented in the wishes granted today. Diagnoses that happen later in the disease cycle or not at all add an additional challenge to reaching every eligible child globally, as do the situations where potential referrers may not realize a child is eligible for a wish.
This locally relevant, globally consistent data serves as a backbone for the definition and deployment of the strategic plan of Make-A-Wish International. This work further supports two groups which are crucial to the mission - the donors and the referring healthcare providers - by building trust in the data-backed decision-making at the organization. Make-A-Wish International knows that IHME’s data is widely trusted and cited around the world and that using this data increases credibility with these key groups.
With straightforward, comprehensive, and trustworthy data, Make-A-Wish International can continue global growth and expansion, knowing they are making informed decisions. This collaboration means that Make-A-Wish is one step closer to fulfilling its ambition to grant the wish of every eligible child.
